The best Microsoft security certification for beginners is SC-900. From there, choose by the work you want to do: SC-200 for security operations, SC-300 for identity, SC-401 for information protection, or SC-500 for securing cloud and AI workloads.
Below, we compare six Microsoft security certifications, from fundamentals to the SC-100 architect certification, and explain how they fit together.
Introduction
Choosing a Microsoft security certification becomes easier when you start with the responsibilities you want to take on. Investigating suspicious activity, controlling access to applications, and protecting sensitive documents all contribute to security, but they require different skills.
Our recommendation is to choose a certification you can connect to practical work. If you already administer Microsoft 365 identities, an identity specialization may be a more useful next step than starting again with broad fundamentals. If you are new to Microsoft’s security tools, building that foundation first can make the technical material easier to understand.
For this list, we selected six certifications covering the main Microsoft security specialties, from foundational knowledge to enterprise architecture. The order reflects that progression. Each entry also includes a relevant Certification Camps bootcamp, with training duration and pricing for the complete program, including its exam vouchers.

Which Microsoft Security Certification Should You Choose?
Start with a task you want to perform confidently, then identify the certification that gives it the most attention. Here are three comparisons that can help narrow the choice.
SC-900 vs. SC-200: Understanding Security or Working in Security Operations?
Choose SC-900 when you need the foundations and an overview of the available tools. Choose SC-200 when your goal is to investigate threats and respond to incidents. Passing SC-900 is not a prerequisite for SC-200, and an experienced IT professional may be ready to start with the technical material.
SC-300 vs. SC-401: Controlling Access or Protecting Information?
Choose SC-300 when your main concern is who can access a resource and under what conditions. Choose SC-401 when your main concern is how sensitive information is identified, protected, and handled. These responsibilities often sit alongside each other, which makes the combined training useful for administrators who manage both identities and data protection.
SC-200 vs. SC-500: Investigating Threats or Implementing Controls?
Choose SC-200 if you want to spend more time analyzing alerts and investigating incidents. Choose SC-500 if you want to spend more time implementing security across cloud resources and AI workloads. There is overlap between the tools, but the day to day responsibilities provide a better basis for your choice.
Microsoft Security Certification Paths
You do not need to earn all six certifications. Build a path around one specialty, then broaden your skills when your responsibilities call for it.
1
Establish Your Starting Point
If Microsoft’s security terminology and products are unfamiliar, consider SC-900 first. If you already work with the relevant systems, compare your practical experience with the associate certification that matches your intended role.
2
Choose a Technical Specialty
- Security operations: Build toward SC-200 with practical investigation and threat hunting skills.
- Identity: Build toward SC-300 with experience managing authentication and access.
- Information security: Build toward SC-401 with experience classifying and protecting sensitive data.
- Cloud and AI security: Build toward SC-500 with a foundation in cloud administration and security controls.
If cloud administration is the area you need to strengthen first, our Microsoft Azure certification roadmap explains the wider progression.
3
Progress to Architecture When Your Experience Supports It
SC-100 becomes a sensible next step when you need to design security across multiple areas. The qualifying associate routes are SC-200, SC-300, and SC-500. Earn one of those associated credentials and pass SC-100 to meet the certification requirements.
Recommended progression and required prerequisites are differentSC-900 is an optional foundation. SC-401 is a useful specialty, but it does not satisfy the current associate prerequisite for Cybersecurity Architect Expert. Passing SC-100 alone does not earn the Expert credential.
Microsoft Security Certification Training Costs and Renewal
Our recommended security bootcamps include the exam vouchers for the certifications covered by each program. They also include live instruction, course materials, labs, and a retake voucher per included exam if needed.
| Bootcamp | Duration | Included Exams | Classroom Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cloud and AI Security Engineer | 4 days | SC-500 | $2,995 |
| Security Fundamentals and Cloud and AI Security Engineer | 5 days | SC-900 and SC-500 | $3,795 |
| Identity and Information Security | 6 days | SC-300 and SC-401 | $4,495 |
| Security Operations and Cybersecurity Architect | 6 days | SC-200 and SC-100 | $4,495 |
Each combined program price covers the complete package. For example, the SC-300 and SC-401 entries above refer to the same six day bootcamp. You do not pay that amount twice to attend the combined program.
Bootcamp duration describes the scheduled training. The preparation you need beforehand depends on your existing knowledge and the level of the program. An accelerated architecture course assumes a stronger technical foundation than an introductory certification.
After certification, SC-900 does not expire. Microsoft’s associate and expert certifications require annual renewal through a free online assessment. Your renewal window opens six months before expiration, and passing extends the credential for one year from its existing expiration date. Plan renewal time alongside your ongoing technical development.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Microsoft Security Certification Is Best for Beginners?
SC-900 is the most suitable starting point on this list for someone new to Microsoft’s security ecosystem. It helps establish the concepts needed to choose a technical specialty. If you already administer Microsoft systems, an associate certification aligned with your work may be a more useful starting point.
Is SC-900 Worth It?
SC-900 is worthwhile when it fills a real knowledge gap. It can help a beginner understand product roles and security terminology, or help someone in a business role participate in technical discussions. Its value is more limited if you already understand that material and need evidence of deeper implementation skills.
Are Microsoft Security Certifications Free?
Earning a certification normally involves paid exams, although specific promotions may sometimes be available. Our bootcamps include the required exam vouchers for their listed programs. Renewal assessments for eligible associate and expert certifications are free.
What Replaced AZ-500?
SC-500 is the current exam for the Cloud and AI Security Engineer Associate credential, the successor to Azure Security Engineer Associate. If you are choosing a new training program, look for SC-500 coverage that includes cloud and AI workload security.
How Long Does It Take to Get Certified?
Our recommended bootcamps run for four to six days, depending on the program. Your total preparation time depends on your starting point. Completing a bootcamp does not automatically award a certification: you must pass the relevant exams and satisfy any credential prerequisites.
Can a Microsoft Security Certification Help You Get a Cybersecurity Job?
A relevant certification can help you demonstrate knowledge, but it does not guarantee employment. Strengthen it with practical examples you can explain in an interview, such as why you selected an access policy or how you investigated an incident. For options beyond Microsoft, see our comparison of the best cybersecurity certifications.
